Birgit Decressin's painting is multi-layered and comprises several groups of works with which the artist has repeatedly dealt with since the beginning of her work. There are the gatherings of people, places drawn with oil paint, small portraits, life-size portraits of women, still lifes , small and large-format ones. Landscapes, animal drawings and objects in clay are also created. Decressin understands painting and drawing as appropriation of the world. The occasion for painting or drawing is always reality, an event, a visual experience. The pictures of squares with crowds are representations of specific places that Decressin visits and appropriates by drawing. It is not the location with its architecture that is shown, but rather the people are the focus of interest. In these pictures Decressin concentrates on people, how they move, hurry, walk slowly, stand in groups, occupy space in any form, so to speak. Temporality becomes important here, the duration or the fleeting appearance of the figures. The place as a place remains undefined in these large pictures drawn with oil paint, is only indicated by a few lines, if at all. Spatiality is only visible through the figure constellation. With the other pictures, the still lifes and portraits, it is the experience of light and color that fascinates the artist. The focus is on painting . The respective content is withdrawn, but always remains recognizable. The color, its wealth of nuances, the composition, the diverse types of brushwork and the application of paint become a visual experience that captivates the viewer, lets him step closer to the picture or brings him back to distance. Often the content of the picture and the spatial perception only become possible through distance. But also in these pictures, in which the subjects of still life and portrait are treated as important continuities in painting and which also arise in the knowledge and respect for the achievements of the great masters of previous centuries, it is about temporality, about the fleetingness of existence. Some of the pictures only appear as a hint of something that was there, others are imposing in its present tense. Outlined in color, worked out in countless color sequences, dabbed, dashed, blurred, set, broadly brushed, fruits appear energetically in still lifes, people in portraits. The depth of knowing, experiencing the world, in this case through seeing, is explored in the work of the painter Birgit Decressin.
