history
Berlin families from the Wedding district began to settle in the south of Bernau in 1923 and set up the first wooden houses in their gardens. The first arbors were built on Lindenstrasse and Börnicker Landweg. Two entrepreneurs from Berlin Dommert and Wuttke and the residents made contracts with Bernau and called the arbor colony "Wudo" (from the first letters of the two entrepreneurs). It was not until 1931 that the city renamed the place Birkenhöhe. A Bernauer chronicler wrote: “There were birch trees here and“ Wudo ”was a fantasy, so that's where the name Birkenhö originated.
During the turmoil of World War II, local residents stayed on their weekend properties. After the end of the war, some came to the village forever and converted and expanded their arbours into real houses. In 1979 the “Association of allotment gardeners Birkenhöhe e. V. ”and an inn“ Waldschänke ”welcomes its guests. A local advisory board was founded after the formation of the local council, consisting of Heidi Scheidt as local director, Peter Brandt as deputy and Skadi Berger. All 16 side streets of the village are named after trees and the district has been expanded with broadband internet access VDSL (broadband infrastructure glass fiber 2020, funded by the State of Brandenburg with funds from the European Union ). With the bus city line 892 you have a connection to Berlin via the train station in Bernau and via Schwanebeck and Birkholz it goes back to Birkenhöhe.
