Bischoffsheim (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bischoffsheim family was a banking family of Jewish origin, whose members were resident at various times in Germany , Belgium , the Netherlands , Great Britain and France . Its founder was Raphael Nathan Bischoffsheim (1773–1814), who came from Tauberbischofsheim in what was then the Electorate of Mainz - hence the name of the family - and who acted as court factor and army supplier to the Elector of Mainz. The Mainz family was closely connected to other Jewish banking families from all over Europe, including Bamberger, Cassel, Goldschmidt , von Hirsch , Montefiore, Rothschild , Speyer and Stern . The two sons of Raphael Nathan Bischoffsheim, Louis-Raphaël Bischoffsheim (1800–1873) and Jonathan-Raphaël Bischoffsheim (1808–1883) founded several banks in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Great Britain . These include the banking house Bischoffsheim, Goldschmidt & Cie , founded in Paris in 1848 , which was merged into the Amsterdam- based Nederlandsche Krediet- en Deposito-Bank (in French, Banque de crédit et de dépôt des Pays-Bas ). The latter merged in 1872 with the Banque de Paris for Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas , today's BNP Paribas .
