Franz Bamberger

Franz Michael Bamberger (born September 26, 1855 in Mainz , † August 27, 1926 in Langenschwalbach ) was a Jewish banker and politician in the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Franz Bamberger was the son of the banker and member of the state parliament Rudolph Bamberger (1821–1900) and his wife Bertha née Seligmann (1827–1915) and nephew of Ludwig Bamberger . On September 22, 1885 he married Anna Klara Lewino (born October 31, 1865 in Mainz), the daughter of the Worms wine merchant Pius Lewino (1836-1900) and his cousin Rosalia Leoni (born November 4, 1838 in Kirchheimbolanden ). Anna Klara Lewino had studied piano with Clara Schumann in Frankfurt and was the second aunt of the pianist Grete Sultan . Franz and Anna Klara Bamberger's sons were the film and theater director Ludwig Berger and the set designer Rudolf Bamberger .

Franz Bamberger studied after graduating from the Grand Ducal School of Mainz 1873 Law and graduated with a doctorate to Dr. jur. from. He then joined the Bamberger & Co. bank in Mainz, founded by his grandfather August Bamberger . He later became a senior partner in the company. From 1911 the Bamberger bank became part of the Berliner Disconto-Gesellschaft . Franz Bamberger became a member of the supervisory board of Disconto-Gesellschaft as well as several other companies. Bamberger had been a member of the Mainz Chamber of Commerce since 1905, vice-president there from 1907 and its president from 1908.

Between 1911 and 1918 he was a member of the first chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . On June 3, 1911, the right to vote was changed with the "Law on the Estates". Now the Chamber of Crafts appointed a representative of the craftsmen, the Chamber of Agriculture a farmer and the Chamber of Commerce a "representative for trade and industry". Franz Bamberger was the representative for trade and industry. Also in 1911 Bamberger was appointed secret councilor of commerce . He had already been active in local politics before that. From 1900 he was city councilor in Mainz and from 1905 to 1911 he was an alderman in the Mainz magistrate, where he was head of the department for art and theater affairs.
