history

Before the Bismarck Column was built, there was an observation tower built in 1889 at the same place. On April 14, 1900 the "Association for the erection of a Bismarckian column on the Pariner Berg" was founded and the location of the erection was selected. The landlord donated the property, field stones and an amount of 1000 marks to the restaurant on the Pariner Berg. The other necessary funds for the tower construction (total costs 11,000 marks ) were covered by donations. The plans for the Bismarck Column came from the architect Eduard Gildemeister . The foundation stone was laid on July 30, 1901, the third anniversary of Otto von Bismarck's death . The completed tower was inaugurated on September 28, 1902.

In the Second World War the tower served as an anti-aircraft position. In 1945 the tower was damaged by former French prisoners of war released from the Pariner Berg forced labor camp . In 1958 the tower was closed because it was dilapidated.

In 1960 the tower became the property of the city of Bad Schwartau , which had it renovated and made it accessible again in 1972. In 1980 the tower was placed under monument protection.
