The diocese of Leoben was an Austrian diocese whose territory extended to parts of Upper Styria and was united with the diocese of Graz-Seckau in 1859 .

history

The diocese was separated from the Archdiocese of Salzburg at the request of Emperor Joseph II . On March 17, 1786, Pope Pius VI voted . the establishment. The first and only bishop Alexander Franz Joseph Graf von Engel (born February 13, 1722 in Füssen ) resided in the Göss monastery near Leoben , where a cathedral chapter was also established.

The diocesan area included Upper Styria and consisted of 157 parishes.

After the death of Bishop Engel on February 22, 1800, the diocese was administered by the cathedral chapter until 1808 and then by the bishops of the Graz-Seckau diocese .

On July 13, 1804, Emperor Franz II ordered the unification of the diocese with the diocese of Graz-Seckau . The actual unification of the two dioceses took place after the late approval of the Pope on September 1, 1859.
