The diocese of Ostuni was a Roman Catholic diocese in Italy with a bishopric in Ostuni . It was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Brindisi .

history

The diocese of Ostuni is first mentioned in 1071 when the then Bishop Datto took part in the consecration of the church of Montecassino . Some authors have ascribed a bishop Melatius, mentioned in a letter from Gregory the Great in 596 or 601, to this episcopal see, but Melatius was bishop in Histonium , which is part of today's Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto .

Ostuni was founded as a diocese in the 10th century and was initially united with the diocese of Monopoli . When Brindisi was elevated to a metropolitan diocese in the 10th century , Ostuni had its own bishop, who became a suffragan of Brindisi.

At the end of the 18th century, Ostuni was affected by a conflict between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Naples , which ended with an agreement of 1791 that the Bishop of Ostuni would receive an appointment from the King of Naples. The seat of Ostuni had been vacant since 1794 and was merged with the Archdiocese of Brindisi on June 27, 1818 with the Apostolic Letter De uteri of Pope Pius VII and dissolved as an independent diocese. On May 14, 1821, however, it was restored by the same Pope with the Apostolic Letter Si qua prae and handed over to the Archbishops of Brindisi as permanent Apostolic Administrators . On September 30, 1986, the Archdiocese of Brindisi was renamed the Archdiocese of Brindisi-Ostuni by the Congregation for the Bishops with the decree Instantibus votis and the Diocese of Ostuni became part of the new Archdiocese.

The parishes Ostuni , Carovigno , San Vito dei Normanni , San Michele Salentino and Locorotondo belonged to the diocese .
