The Bláhnúkur (also: Bláhnjúkur ) is a 943 m high volcano in Landmannalaugar in the Icelandic highlands . It is located in the municipality of Rangárþing ytra .
Surname
The name was given to the mountain by Pálmi Hannesson.
Volcanism
The volcano formed during the Ice Age is part of the Torfajökull volcanic system .
It consists largely of Pechstein , a rhyolitic rock, which emerged in outbreaks among ice age glaciers, thereby explains the unusual blue-gray color. The greenish tuffs that make up the mountain are less firm than palagonite tuffs . Columns made of sour pitch stone alternate with pillow lavas made of rockic rock . Basalt, often up to a meter thick, covers this mixture.
In the Grænagil Gorge , which lies to the north at its foot, you can also find beige and reddish rhyolite rocks and greenish copper precipitates.
hike
Marked hiking trails lead up the mountain and through the Grænagil gorge, which lies between it and the Laugahraun lava field , and up to it.
Here you can also start the Laugavegur trekking path , which leads south over the mountains into the Þórsmörk valley. Another, easier way to start the trekking path leads directly behind the huts over the Laugahraun lava field.
