The Berlin Wind Association was a woodwind quintet with piano or harpsichord . The association existed from 1966 to 1993 and made outstanding contributions to the performance of new music .

history

In 1966 six musicians from the orchestras of the State Opera Unter den Linden , the Komische Oper Berlin and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin founded the Berlin Wind Association. It was the first ensemble in the GDR that dealt intensively with new music , which at first was not always welcome. The premiere of Chamber Music I with tape by Paul-Heinz Dittrich caused a scandal during the 1971 International Music Biennale and led to Dittrich's teaching position at the University of Music being terminated.

In addition to regular concerts with exclusively new music, it was a particular concern of the Berlin Bläservereinigung to reach a wide audience with programs from different musical epochs. The focus, however, was on works by young composers of new music from the GDR. The sonata for wind quintet + piano by Friedrich Goldmann was heard in over 70 concerts. Compositions by Georg Katzer and Paul-Heinz Dittrich also achieved high performance numbers.

In 1986 Georg Katzer received first prize in the composition competition "Reiner Marie Jose" in Geneva for his harpsichord concerto in the inclusion of the Berlin Wind Association.

With the fall of 1989, the framework conditions for chamber music deteriorated. The financing of the composition commissions and the associated special fees for their rehearsal and production of the performance material by the Kulturfonds der DDR, publishers, academies and large companies were omitted. No new sponsors were found. In addition, the financial possibilities of broadcasters in West and East Germany for concert recordings and chamber music productions were restricted. The "Deutsche Schallplatte" with the label Eterna and Nova, which is important for chamber music, was dissolved. The organizers' interest in new music mainly shifted to world premieres. Furthermore, the exemption of members from orchestral service for chamber music concerts was no longer guaranteed.

The Berlin Wind Association and the “Hanns Eisler New Music Group” from Leipzig ceased operations. The last concert of the Berlin Wind Association with compositions of new music from the GDR era took place in Turin in 1993 .

Works and performances

Since chamber music literature for wind instruments is manageable, the harpsichordist and pianist of the group arranged compositions from the 16th and 17th centuries - including those with singing - for this instrumentation. In addition, composition commissions were given to contemporaries. 50 paid commissioned works were created. Among these was also z. B. the opera R. Hot by Friedrich Goldmann. The world premiere took place in the Apollosaal of the German State Opera. A few years later another 20 performances with the soloist ensemble of the Dresden State Opera followed in Dresden . The Blind after Maeterlinck by Paul-Heinz Dittrich was premiered in the Berliner Ensemble with actors from this theater. Victor Bruns composed a concerto for 5 wind instruments with secondary instruments and orchestra .

Among the composers commissioned by the Wind Instruments Association were Reiner Bredemeyer , Paul Dessau , Paul-Heinz Dittrich, Friedrich Goldmann, Jörg Herchet , Helge Jung , Georg Katzer, Hermann Keller , Nicolaus Richter de Vroe , Friedrich Schenker , Christfried Schmidt , H. Johannes Wallmann , Ruth Zechlin , Helmut Zapf . In addition, there were GDR premieres of works by Edison Denisow , Helmut Flammer , Hans Werner Henze , Klaus Huber , Chen Yi , compositions from Denmark, France, Iceland, Yugoslavia, Sweden, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the USA.

In the course of 27 years, around 120 radio productions and around 85 concert recordings were made in Germany and abroad.
