Black Mirror 2 (in the Anglo-American language area Black Mirror II: Reigning Evil ) is a point-and-click adventure for Windows computers and the sequel to the adventure game Black Mirror from 2004. It was not developed by the original development studio Future Games , but by Cranberry Production and published by dtp entertainment at the end of September 2009 . The direct sequel Black Mirror 3 followed in 2011 .

action

Twelve years have passed since the bloody events of the first part, which ended with the death of the protagonist Samuel Gordon. The English town of Willow Creek has since tried to recover in its own way. Thousands of miles away, in Biddeford, Maine, USA, student Darren Michaels works in a photography shop during his semester break until his quiet life takes a fateful turn.

The core of the plot of Black Mirror 2 is a romance between the protagonist Darren and a woman named Angelina, whom he meets as a customer. When they first meet, Darren suspects that Angelina is being followed and threatened. When Angelina suddenly disappears from Biddeford, Darren begins investigating Willow Creek. He learns of the curse that should weigh on the Gordon family and investigates many places in Willow Creek that are known to the player from the first part of the Black Mirror series . Through countless murders and a mysterious order, Darren involuntarily realizes that there is more to the curse of the Gordons than he first wanted to believe.

Gameplay

Like its predecessor, Black Mirror 2 relies on a mixture of 2D backgrounds for the environment and 3D characters that move in front of these scenes. The character Darren Michaels is controlled by point-and-click . The game principle mainly consists of interaction with the environment, characters and objects. Michaels can talk to people or examine, use and, if necessary, record objects. The player must solve various logic and combination puzzles in order to advance in the plot. Compared to its predecessor, the possibilities of dying during the game have been defused. The script for Black Mirror 2 comes from the Berlin author Anne von Vaszary and the King Art creative director Jan Theysen.

development

The first work on the sequel was carried out by the original Future Games development team, which was later replaced by dtp by the Bremen developer King Art . In 2008, development was finally transferred to the company's own development studio Cranberry Production in Hanover, which was formed by developers from the 4Head Studios (including Die Gilde 2 ). Black Mirror 2 used the vision engine of the German provider Trinigy , but retained the concept of the pre-rendered backgrounds known from its predecessor , in front of which the 3D animated figures move.

synchronization

The German-language dubbing of the 110,000-word dialogue was carried out by the Hamburg sound studio Toneworx, with Erik Schäffler directing the dialogue . Due to the irascible nature of the protagionist Darren Michaels, the German version contains numerous curses and swear words, which have been censored in the English version.

The international ratings for Black Mirror 2 were average, but significantly better than the predecessor (Metacritic: 71 out of 100). The average ratings of German magazines were significantly higher (Critify: 81 out of 100).

The Euro Gamer magazine pointed out that Black Mirror 2 look that its development budget by several million dollars less than in Triple-A located -Titeln have and that you look at the stake. The magazine praised the “attention to detail”, which manifests itself in numerous little things, logical and well thought-out puzzles, a successful setting and the game's pun that flashes up from time to time. It criticized the large extent of the dialogues, which caused a "sea of trivialities" to break in on the player. Reviewer Joachim Hesse admitted, however, that the variety of dialogues for players who like to deal intensively with a game certainly has its appeal.

“Once again, I can praise an adventure game from Germany, this time for its exciting story and dense atmosphere away from all fantasy and history paths. Black Mirror 2 even takes the undisputed top position among modern crime and horror adventures. But I can't get used to having to denounce seemingly ineradicable habits among adventure developers, such as lame simple mini-games or open endings that brazenly refer to a sequel. "

Problems with the ProtectDVD copy protection have occurred repeatedly. Some DVD drives were incompatible with the game, such as the Benq DW1670.
