The Blackbirds was a German beat and rock band from Püttlingen in the Saarland . The group existed with changing line-ups for more than 50 years, released two studio albums and was active as a cover band for a long time .

history

The group was formed in 1965 from a school band from the Völklingen secondary school , the singer was Werner Breinig, a former member of the Regensburger Domspatzen . After the first appearance on May 1, 1965, there were regular youth dance events in Püttlingen and the surrounding area. The program of the young cover band included titles by the Beatles, Kings, Animals, etc. This was followed by national appearances in France, Belgium and Italy or at beat competitions. Through a contact through their manager Wolfgang Stein, the debut album No Destination was recorded in the studio of Horst Jankowski in Stuttgart in 1968 . In 1970, the band in the 1000 radio broadcast was Hello Twen of Manfred Sexauer for popular beat band of Saarland voted. In 1971 the second album Touch of Music was recorded. This album, produced in the Rhenus studio in Cologne under Conny Plank , was now part of progressive rock with long instrumental parts .

The group then became active as the Sixties co-association after a further change in line-up . There were numerous appearances at city celebrations and festivals in the region. A classic in the repertoire was always Sherry Baby , originally from The Four Seasons ( Sherry , 1962), this was pressed as a single in 1969 and 1982. In 1991 the cover album Past and Present was released for the 25th anniversary .

In 2005/2006 the Long Hair Music label released the two studio albums again as CD and vinyl album. In 2015, the 50th anniversary was celebrated with an open air event in the Püttlinger Jungswald.

The last appearance of the band took place in 2018 as part of a portrait on SR television .
