The Blackstone River is a river in the US states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island .
Its length is approximately 80 km and it drains a catchment area of approximately 1400 km². The long-term industrial use is reflected in the pollution. The river was therefore described in 1990 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as "the most polluted river in the country in terms of toxic sediments".
history
The river is named after William Blackstone (original spelling William Blaxton ) who reached Weymouth , Massachusetts in 1623 and became the first settler of what is now Boston in 1625 . He moved to Rhode Island in 1635 and built his house on the river, which later became Cumberland .
In 1790, Samuel Slater opened the first successful water-powered cotton mill in America, powered by the waters of the Blackstone River.
In 1955, a major flood caused extensive damage in Woonsocket .
The name of the local population was Kittacuck, which means something like "large tidal river". The river was named an American Heritage River in 1998 along with the Woonasquatucket River to the south .
