Blaise de Montesquiou-Lasseran-Massencôme , seigneur de Monluc (partly also written Montluc ) (* 1502 in Saint-Puy , Canton Valence-sur-Baïse ; † July 26, 1577 in Estillac , Canton Laplume ) was a French historian , Colonel général the Infantry and Marshal of France from 1574 to 1577.

Life

Monluc came from the de Lasseran Massencôme de Monluc family, a branch branched off in the 14th century from one of the oldest and most illustrious noble families in France, the Montesquiou from Gascony . He was the eldest son of François de Monluc and his wife Ameline de Trais. One of his brothers was Jean de Monluc (around 1503–1579).

Monluc served under Pierre du Terrail in Italy and gained great fame in 1555 during the eight months' defense of Siena . He also took part in the French wars of religion and was in 1574 by the French King Henry III. appointed Marshal of France .

However, his fame is based on the "Commentaires" , his memoirs , which offer a description of contemporary military tactics. The work is written in a conversational style and is considered a literary gem.

Monluc is an ancestor of the French statesman , foreign minister and diplomat Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord (1754-1838).
