Blinde Kuh is the first German language search engine for children and is operated by the non-profit association Blinde Kuh e. V. based in Hamburg .
background
The reason for setting up this internet portal was to offer children orientation and adequate access to the internet. The target group are 8 to 12 year olds.
From 1997 to 2004 the Blinde Kuh website was run on a voluntary basis. Since 2004, the project has been funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth according to the Federal Children and Youth Plan (KJP) . The Federal Ministry also pays the traffic costs. The Hamburg provider Nexinto will continue to cover the costs for the server housing .
structure
Blind cow is not a classic search engine that records content by means of a crawler , but an editorially maintained web directory . The entries are provided with a description, classified according to target group age, language and country of origin and classified in categories such as nature , geography or history . This catalog can be searched or leafed through.
In addition, Blinde Kuh also offers its own content, including learning programs, an Internet lexicon, an art gallery, recipes and e-zines . The News section summarizes headlines from selected websites.
Awards
Blinde Kuh was awarded the Children's Culture Prize in 1999, the Pedi Media Education Award in 1998 and the “ Grimme Online Knowledge and Education Award ” in 2006.
