Blitzkrieg is a British heavy metal band that was formed in 1980. They are one of the style-defining bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal .
Band history
After the band was founded in October 1980 in Leicester (England), they soon received a recording contract with the Neat Records label . There the single Buried Alive was released , on whose B-side the song Blitzkrieg was included. After the band had recorded a song for the Compilation Lead Weight , an extensive tour of England followed. In December 1981 the band separated again.
Brian Ross and Mick Moore first founded Avenger and then toured with Satan (1983) . Now that Ross believed it was finally time to release Blitzkrieg's debut album , the recordings soon began. The album A Time of Changes , which should have been released in 1981, was released in 1986.
The band gained great fame when Metallica released the former B-side Blitzkrieg on the maxi single Creeping Death (and on Garage Inc. ) as a cover version and drummer Lars Ulrich described the band as a formative influence on the band's style. Now the song has appeared on countless compilations.
In 1991 the album 10 Years of Blitzkrieg , recorded the previous year, was released , where new versions of the two songs of the single, as well as three new songs can be heard. The next album was Unholy Trinity , which was released in 1995 and which had taken three years to record. It received consistently good reviews, while the band performed several times in Greece and Germany. There they played u. a. at Wacken Open Air on August 8, 1998. Shortly before that, on July 13, the album The Mists of Avalon was released, on which Glenn S. Howes celebrated his return to the band and replaced Tony J. Liddle.
In 1999 the band was able to build on its success and played at the US festival Metal Meltdown 1 , among others , before Ross was injured in a car accident in April 2000 so that a break of half a year was necessary. Shortly afterwards he put together a new line-up, this time again including Liddle on guitar. In addition to writing songs for a new album, the focus was mainly on rehearsing for the performance at the Swedish Motala Festival, where the band performed on February 16, 2002.
After the album Absolute Power was recorded, the band performed at Metal Meltdown 4 together with Diamond Head and Saxon and played again in Wacken on August 3rd. This is noteworthy because there are only a few bands that have had two appearances at the festival. After the release of Absolute Power on October 7, 2002, there was another line-up change on guitar in 2003 when Ken Johnson replaced Liddle. In 2004 the live album Absolutely Live! published, followed in 2005 by Sins & Greed .
On August 10, 2007, Theater of the Damned was released on the Armageddon Music label.
After a break of several years and several line-up changes, the band announced a new album for the end of 2012 in the summer of 2012. Occasional festival appearances in Europe are completed, while the band is already playing some songs from the as yet unreleased new album.
This comeback album was finally released on October 22, 2013 via Metal Nation Records under the name Back from Hell . The trade press received it positively because it sounds “more organic and lively than the two predecessors” again.
