action

The Bumstead family is once again short of money. While Blondie Bumstead is calculating the family budget and secretly dreaming of a mink coat , husband Dagwood is dying to join the local fishing club. To do this, however, he needs $ 200. Shortly afterwards, an unexpected guest arrives at the Bumsteads with Dagwood's old flame Joan Forrester. Dagwood is clearly nervous and fears Blondie's jealousy. Nevertheless, he agrees that Joan chauffeurs him to the fishing club. On the way he lets Joan persuade him to go to the cinema with her instead of going to the fishing club. There he spontaneously took part in a competition, in which he promptly won the welcome 200 dollars.

Plagued by a remorse towards Blondie, Dagwood decides not to spend the money on his membership in the fishing club, but to give Blondie the longed-for mink. To surprise her, but still buy the right coat size, he lets Joan try on the mink coats in the department store. As luck would have it, Blondie witnessed the fashion show. She adds one and one together, storms home, packs her things, and is about to leave Dagwood. However, she changes her mind, returns and waits for him to return. She is visibly surprised when Dagwood presents her new mink coat. Now everything becomes clear to her and she happily embraces Dagwood.

background

Blondie on a Budget was the fifth entry in the 28-part Blondie series from the B-film division of Columbia Pictures. As original in turn served Chic Young's popular Blondie - comic strips that were filmed in 1957 as a TV series.

In addition to the regular actors Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake , who played Blondie and Dagwood, Blondie on a Budget also stars the young, still dark-haired Rita Hayworth as Joan Forrester.

Reviews

"Blondie's longing for a fur coat and Dagwood's desire to join a fishing club, which he can't afford, are not issues to care about," said Photoplay . The cast do "what there is to do". At-A-Glance Film Reviews noted that Rita Hayworth, who plays Dagwood's old flame, was "perhaps the biggest star" to guest-star on the Blondie franchise. The humor of the film is "mature compared to previous episodes". While watching, the viewer should look for “a wonderful scene” in which the bitch Daisy “drank a little too much”.

  2. “Rita Hayworth, perhaps the biggest star to make a guest appearance in the Blondie series , stars as an old flame of Dagwood's. The film's humor is mellow compared to most of the other early episodes […]. Watch for a classic scene where Daisy [the dog] has a little too much to drink.
