The Blue Bulls (German: the Blue Bulls ; formerly called Northern Transvaal or Noord-Transvaal ; also known as Vodacom Blue Bulls for sponsorship reasons , Afrikaans : the Blou Bulle ) are a South African rugby union team. It plays in the Currie Cup and its gaming operations are organized by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union (BBRU). The home games will be played in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria . The association provides players for the Bulls franchise team , which plays in the international Super Rugby .

history

In 1938, the Northern Transvaal Rugby Union, now the BBRU, separated from the Transvaal Rugby Union and became an independent association. In their first season, the team's squad was full of national players, including Danie Craven . However, it was not until 1946 that they entered the list of winners of the Currie Cup. 15 single and three shared victories have followed to date. The Blue Bulls' most successful era began in 1968 when ten " Springboks " wore the team's jersey, including Frik du Preez . That year they lost only one game and that against the British and Irish Lions . In 1971 there was no defeat at all, the draw against the Transvaal brought the shared title. In the 1970s they dominated the Currie Cup and posted numerous players for the national team. At the beginning of the 1980s, the era of Naas Botha began , who led the team to six more championships. In 1998 it was again a Springbo legend, this time Joost van der Westhuizen , who helped the Blue Bulls to win the Currie Cup. In the early 2000s, South African rugby was again dominated, producing players like Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield , who have been regulars on the national team for years. Coach Heyneke Meyer changed the team's style to an attractive, offensive game that also made the Super 14 franchise called Bulls successful. This team won the international league three times, consisting of Australian, New Zealand and South African national teams. It mainly includes players who are also eligible to play for the Blue Bulls, a few are provided by the Falcons . Since the two competitions Super 14 and Currie Cup do not overlap, this is possible.
