Bluff Harbor is a natural harbor in the urban area of Invercargill City in the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

The Bluff Harbor is located approximately 15 km south of Invercargill on the South side of the South Island of New Zealand with access to Foveaux Strait , the strait between the South Island and Stewart Iceland . The natural harbor, which is open to the southeast, has a length of around 7.6 km and measures around 5.4 km at its widest point. The coastline of the heavily silted up body of water on its northeast and eastern shores extends over around 27 km , not counting Awarua Bay , which is adjacent to the east and around 12 km long , which is viewed as a separate body of water.

Towards the port exit on the peninsula with the 265  m high The Bluff is the place Bluff with its industrial port and on the northeast side of the port entrance, which is called the North Channel here and is 590 m wide at its narrowest point, the aluminum smelter of the New Zealand's Aluminum Smelter Company .

Bluff Island Harbor

The 40-hectare port facility is called Bluff Island Harbor , which began in 1952 with the embankment on a sandbank in front of the town of Bluff and ended its first stage of expansion in December 1960 with the opening of the artificially created industrial port on the island. In 1982 the facility was expanded again. Today, the industrial port, which also includes a small marina heard is from the company Southport NZ Ltd operated.
