Flower woman is a popular name that emerged in the 18th century for a Hökersche who sells (e) flowers on marketplaces in Berlin . The addition Berliner Original does not designate a real person, but embodies the Berlin character and means "having hair on your teeth and sometimes being a bit coarse". That includes (e) mostly rough dialogues in brash Berlin jargon without grammatical accuracy. In this way the flower sellers attracted attention and interested customers . The term flower woman has not remained limited to Berlin, the florist is also referred to and respected as a flower woman in many other German cities, as shown by the inauguration of a memorial for an honorary citizen in Schwerin in 2010 .

Use of the term and typical clothing

Possibly there was also a real person for the name, because in some depictions she is called the flower woman Jette . However, no binding materials have been handed down for this.

Towards the end of the 20th century, the name slowly went out of fashion because the sales facilities and sales culture had fundamentally changed. Even if there are still flower stalls in markets today, the behavior described is rarely found.

The pictorial representations of the flower woman show the artists' ideas on this catchphrase - different situations when offering and / or selling flowers. Derived from the fashion of the 19th / 20th centuries. In the early 20th century, the Berlin flower women were usually depicted with a large, decorated hat , a shawl over their shoulders and a wide ankle-length apron , surrounded by baskets and vessels with bouquets of flowers .

The memory of this special professional group lives on for a while in the choice of a "flower queen" at the annual Weißensee Flower Festival .
