The flower pond is an artificially created pond in the western ring area of the city of Braunschweig in the 19th century with an area of over 3000 m², which is used for surface drainage of the surrounding area of the Westbahnhof . Since 2014 it has been part of the youth center there.

geography

The flower pond in the redevelopment area at Westbahnhof

The flower pond is located in the southwestern area of the city of Braunschweig near the former Westbahnhof, which was an industrial and marshalling yard. He is from Jödebrunnengraben , the outflow of less than 200 meters away Jödebrunnens , drained and takes the rainwater from the surrounding commercial properties. It is identified as a rain retention basin on the fence . It is located immediately to the east of the western ring track and at the end of the Blumenstrasse, which is presumably named after it. Its shape is determined by straight edges and unnatural angles, which can be traced back to its artificial creation and the later development of Münchenstrasse on its northern border.

History and current use

In this map from 1899, the flower pond has another shape.

The Jödebrunnengraben has always absorbed the excess water from the Jödebrunnen and directs it into the Schölke . In maps from before the 19th century, it runs through the area of the current flower pond, but without this having been recorded. Only since the establishment of the brickworks in 1864, with their deep clay pits, did the flower pond appear on the maps south of the largest brickworks on what was then Broitzemer Strasse.

For decades it was surrounded by commercial properties and overgrown in the peripheral area. With the development of the area around the Westbahnhof through European ERDF funding , a skater hall, a football field and a basketball field were built between the pond and allotment gardens in 2014, and various open spaces were converted into a youth field from which the pond is freely accessible. Its bank area was partially cleared of vegetation.
