Robert James "Bob" Adams (born February 28, 1917 in Coleford , † September 1, 1970 in Blakeney ) was an English football goalkeeper .

Career

Adams is said to have played for amateur clubs Coleford AFC and Broadwell Amateurs before playing at Chepstow Town in the 1931/32 season, when the club won the championship in the Gloucestershire Senior League . As a result, Adams was presented on an amateur basis as a test player at the Welsh club Cardiff City and was still 15 years old on February 18, 1933 a few minutes before the start of the game because of the failure of goalkeeper Tom Farquharson for a home game of the Football League Third Division South against Southend United appointed to the squad. Immediately after the 2-0 win in his debut game, he received a professional contract.

Behind Farquharson Adams came up to his departure in July 1934 to a total of eleven league appearances. In August 1934, league rival Bristol Rovers signed Adams, and there was also interest from the London club Crystal Palace . Shortly after his arrival in Bristol, a muscle tear in his thigh put him out of action for several months and only after the failure of goalkeeper Jack Ellis did Adams make his debut in January 1935 in a 3-1 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup . Two league appearances followed by the end of the season, including on the final day of the match against Gillingham FC , when he saved two penalties. In August 1935 Adams was piloted by Billy McCracken to the third division FC Millwall and received there after successful confirmation of his fitness a contract for the following season.

Even at Millwall, Adams was denied the step to the goalkeeper. First competitor Duncan Yuill was preferred, when Adams then moved into the team at the end of March 1936 and conceded only two goals in five games, he broke his leg against Luton Town in mid-April 1936 . After his injury, Millwall put him on the transfer list, but in July 1936 Millwall decided to sign him for the 1936/37 season. Just a few weeks later, he broke his leg again. The goalkeeper played his first game in eight months in December 1936 for the reserve team in the Southern League against FC Folkestone .

In September 1937 it was reported that he was playing the upcoming season at FC Walsall , but competitive appearances for the first team are not documented. In September 1938, when his wedding to Evelyn May Mills was worth extensive press coverage in the local news papers, he played in the Birmingham & District League for Hereford United . In April 1939, he coached the local amateur club Marions United .

Adams, who was also active in sports as a cricketer, earned his living as a plumbing technician after his football career .
