Robert Jerry Lanier (born September 10, 1948 in Buffalo , New York ) is a retired American basketball player . Between 1970 and 1984 he played in the US professional league NBA for the teams of the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks . Lanier is 2.11 m tall and played on the position of the center .

Career

He was first selected by the Detroit Pistons in the 1970 NBA Draft . After his first season was called to the NBA All-Rookie Team . Furthermore, it received in 1974 the award MVP of the All-Star Games awarded. In 1978, Lanier received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his social commitment . During his career as an NBA player with the Pistons, he was called up to the NBA All-Star Team a total of seven times. In 1980 he was sold to the Milwaukee Bucks , with which he won the Division Championship in all of his five years and was elected to the All-Star Game one last time in 1982. In 1984 he resigned from basketball. Lanier is one of the few NBA players ever with a career average of more than 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Pistons and Bucks withdrew jersey number 16 after the end of his career, so that it will no longer be awarded by either team in his honor.

After his career, Lanier was president of the National Basketball Players Association from 1980 to 1985 .

On May 11, 1992, Bob Lanier was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . In 1995 he tried to coach the Golden State Warriors , but was fired after 37 games and a 12-25 record.

Today Lanier runs his own company that specializes in marketing.
