Bobby Plater
Robert "Bobby" Plater (born May 13, 1914 in Newark (New Jersey) , † November 20, 1982 in Lake Tahoe ) was an American swing jazz musician ( alto saxophone , clarinet , flute ) .
Plater began playing alto sax at the age of twelve and had his first engagement with Donald Lambert and the Savoy Dictators in Newark. From 1940 to 1942 he played with Tiny Bradshaw and then served in the US military until 1945. He played briefly with Cootie Williams and was from 1946 to 1964 mainly with Lionel Hampton , with whom he also recorded a lot. He also worked as a freelance musician. He is best known as the alto saxophonist in the Count Basie Orchestra , of which he was a member from 1964 (as the successor to Frank Wess ) until his death.
Plater only recorded once under his own name, in 1950 for Bullet Records. He is one of the composers on The Jersey Bounce .
