Bogdan Denitch
Bogdan Denitch (actually Bogdan Denić ; born August 9, 1929 in Sofia , † March 28, 2016 in Split ) was an American sociologist .
Life
Bogdan Denitch was born in Sofia in 1929 as the son of a Yugoslav diplomat. Denitch was Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the City University of New York . He was politically involved with the Democratic Socialists of America , whose honorary chairman he later became. Since 1980 he has hosted the Socialist Scholars Conference annually in New York City . In 1991 he founded the NGO Transitions to Democracy (ToD) , which campaigns for human rights and against nationalism in the successor states of Yugoslavia . Since 1991 he has hosted an annual conference called the School on Democracy and Social Justice for human rights activists from these states. Bogdan Denitch served on the editorial board of Dissent magazine .
In 1999 he advocated military intervention by NATO in the Kosovo war , but not in the form of air strikes, instead he called for the use of ground troops.
Bogdan Denitch had lived in New York since the 1950s. He spent half of the year there, the other half he was on the road in the former Yugoslavia. Denitch had a residence on the island of Brač .
