history

Russian Empire

Construction of the road began in the Middle Ages and proceeded towards Moscow . After the visit of Empress Catherine II , a new regular city map was developed. In the years 1823 to 1824 the bell tower was built on the Church of the Blessed Virgin ( Russian Церковь Покрова Пресвятой Богородицы ). Since then, the street has been known as "Bolshaya Pokrovskaya", mostly it was only called "Pokrowka" for short.

When stone houses were first built on the street at the turn of the 19th century, it became the main street of the city. Here were the residences of generals, princely families, the governor, his deputy and other high officials. In 1896 the Nicholas Theater was built, the opening of which coincided with the beginning of the All-Russian Industrial and Craft Exhibition . On July 18, 1896 it was visited by Tsar Nicholas II . With the building density increasing at the beginning of the 20th century, both sides of the street were finally built on. In 1913 the main bank was built on the street and opened for the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

Soviet time

After the October Revolution , the street was renamed after the revolutionary Jakow Sverdlov and carried the colloquial name "Sverdlovka". Around 1935 the Church of the Intercession was demolished. The street was a carriageway until the 1980s, and it became a pedestrian zone in the early 1980s .

present

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the street was renamed Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. In 2004 the street was completely reconstructed. It was paved with cobblestones and bronze sculptures were installed on both sides. The most popular are the sculpture "The Funny Goat" in front of the theater and the sculpture of the policeman on Minin and Poscharsky Square .
