The Bondo District was a district in the Nyanza Province in Kenya . The capital of the district was Bondo . The district bordered on Lake Victoria and to the west on Uganda . Until 1998 the area belonged to the Siaya District . Bondo District was divided into five divisions: Maranda, Nyang'oma, Rarieda, Madiany and Usigu. As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Siaya County .
economy
Most of the people in the Bondo District made a living from agriculture, ranching and fishing. The area of the Bondo District actually comprised 1972 km², of which 1000 km² was water in Lake Victoria. 70.6% of the people lived below the poverty line in 2007. Bondo District was thus one of the poorest districts in Kenya.
Mainly cotton , millet , sorghum , beans , maize , cassava and potatoes were grown . Livestock farming focused on dairy cows and zebus , sheep , domestic goats and poultry .
The fishermen mainly caught nile perch , tilapiini and rastrineobola argentea . In 2007 there were ten aquaculture farms with 18 fish ponds.
tourism
There were five hotels in the district, all in the capital, Bondo. Mainly seminars and workshops took place there, tourism was not very pronounced. The district had potential tourist attractions with the Migwena Sports and Cultural Festivals , the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga mausoleum and the Ramogi Hills , a prehistoric site of the Luo . Wild birds and water buffalo , crocodiles and sitatungas on the Yala river could also be observed as part of ecotourism .
Healthcare
In 2007 there were 43 health care facilities in the Bondo District. In 2007, only the District Hospital had doctors among the state institutions. The doctor-patient ratio was 1: 1700, a nurse cared for 50 patients. Mainly malaria , diarrhea, respiratory infections (including tuberculosis ), skin diseases and HIV- positive patients or patients suffering from AIDS were treated. The prevalence for HIV and AIDS was 23.6%.
education
In 2007, Bondo District had 245 primary schools and 45 secondary schools , one school for the deaf and one school for mentally disabled children. Secondary schools had a technical institute and a college .
Flora and fauna
There were forests on the hilltops in the Bondo District; there was no significant forest cover in the lowlands. Exotic tree species such as Callistris Robusta , Australian silver , eucalyptus and various representatives of the genus of the cassia grew in the forests . In addition, acacias , desert dates , umbrella acacias and irokos grew in the district . The largest forest was the Ramogi Forest in the Usigu Division with 283 hectares . Most of the forests were in good condition in 2007. It was forbidden to cut down the forests for building materials. Most of the timber was imported from the Rift Valley Province .
Hippos , crocodiles , water buffalo , antelopes , wild boars and sitatungas lived in the area of the Bondo District .
