Bonhill is a small town in the Scottish council area of West Dunbartonshire . It is located in the agglomeration Vale of Leven on the east bank of the Leven across from Alexandria . Balloch borders in the north, and Dumbarton is three kilometers south .

history

The Parish Bonhill was first mentioned in 1270 as Buthehille . The rural area developed slowly in the following centuries. Bonhill is the oldest parish in the Vale of Leven, but still relatively young. Since the middle of the 17th century, cattle traders used the ford in the Leven to cross the river. At the beginning of the 18th century a church was built there; a predecessor of today's parish church. Like many communities in the area, Bonhill developed with the textile industry. The Dalmonach Works were founded there in 1786. In the 1840s there were already four textile companies in Bonhill. In 1836 a toll bridge was built over Leven. The city experienced a further phase of growth in the 1970s when housing was created in the surrounding area as a result of the overpopulation of Glasgow . In 2011, 9,356 people lived in Bonhill.

traffic

Bonhill is just off the A813 . The A82 on the west bank of the Clyde , which connects Glasgow to Inverness via Fort William , connects the city to the trunk road network. From Balloch the A811 leads to Stirling . In the middle of the 19th century Alexandria got its own station, which was served on the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire Junction Railway of the North British Railway between Bowling and Balloch . Today the trains of the North Clyde Line stop there , some of which go via Glasgow to Edinburgh . Bonhill itself does not have a train station. The nearest airport is Glasgow Airport, around 15 km away .
