Bonifatius Fischer OSB (born August 20, 1915 in Friedrichshafen , † April 19, 1997 in Mulhouse (Grefrath) ) was a German theologian and Benedictine in the Beuron Archabbey and founder and long-time director of the Vetus Latina Institute there .

biography

After joining the Archabbey of Beuron in 1934, Paul Fischer took on the religious name Bonifatius and began studying philosophy at the Benedictine College of S. Anselmo in Rome in 1936 . In 1945 Bonifatius Fischer returned to Beuron and was entrusted with the work on the Vetus Latina by Archabbot Benedikt Baur . He was to continue the collection of the remains of the oldest Latin Bible translations founded by Pastor Josef Denk (1849–1927) and begin the planned edition and, if possible, bring it to a close. For this purpose, under the direction of Bonifatius Fischer, the Vetus Latina Institute of the Beuron Archabbey was established, which in the years to come developed into an internationally recognized center for researching and editing the text of the Latin Bible.

Bonifatius Fischer acquired the knowledge necessary for his work from Alban Dold , an internationally known specialist in palaeography, manuscript studies and palimpsest research . He developed the principles and criteria for the Beuron edition of the Vetus Latina and, with his edition of Genesis, completed in 1954, presented the first volume in the series. Editions of further writings of the Vetus Latina of the Old and New Testaments followed under his direction. Bonifatius Fischer quickly acquired the reputation of an outstanding expert in this field through numerous essays and studies on the Latin Bible manuscripts and the Latin Bible text. This is documented by his decisive contribution to the Stuttgart hand edition of the Vulgate (1st edition 1969; 2nd edition 1975), for which he also worked out a five-volume concordance of words (1977). In addition, at the invitation of the Institute for New Testament Text Research in Münster , Bonifatius Fischer participated in the work on the 26th edition of the Novum Testamentum Graece (Nestle-Aland), in the revision of the Greek New Testament and in the Editio Critica Maior of the Greek New Testament.

For health reasons, Bonifatius Fischer gave up the management of the Vetus Latina Institute in Beuron in 1972. He went to the Benedictine convent Mariendonk as a spiritual director , where he continued his research on the Latin Bible until his death.
