Jane Ellen "Bonnie" Newman (also J. Bonnie Newman ; born June 2, 1945 in Lawrence , Essex County , Massachusetts ) is an American university professor and politician ( Republican Party ). In February 2009, she was temporarily intended to succeed US Senator Judd Gregg after his nomination as the new Secretary of Commerce in the Obama cabinet ; when Gregg resigned a week after his appointment, Newman's nomination also fell.

Life

Bonnie Newman received her bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's College in Maine ; she later earned a Masters from Pennsylvania State University . She then worked at the University of New Hampshire from 1969 to 1978 , most recently as dean . In the 1980s she then embarked on a career in politics. She worked as Chief of Staff for Judd Gregg during his tenure in the US House of Representatives ; she also held the post of Deputy Secretary of Commerce under President Ronald Reagan . Even under his successor George Bush , Bonnie Newman remained in government service as Assistant to the President for Management and Administration until 1991.

As a result, she concentrated again on her academic work. From 1998 to 1999 she was acting dean of the Whittemore School of Business and Economics , after which she became dean of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and remained in this position until 2005. She finally returned to the University of New Hampshire as acting president in May 2006.

At the beginning of February 2009, a successor was sought in the Senate for Judd Gregg, who was apparently changing to the federal government. Governor John Lynch , himself a Democrat , had promised Gregg that he would again appoint a member of the Republicans. The choice fell on Bonnie Newman, who accepted the appointment and declared that she would not run again in the regular election for her Senate seat in November 2010. On February 12, Gregg resigned from the ministerial office due to political differences and decided to continue his work in Congress . Bonnie Newman accepted this without contradiction, thanked the governor for his trust and declared that she wanted to continue working in non-political areas for the people of New Hampshire. Secretary of Commerce was Gary Locke in place of Gregg .
