four shareholder college

Bordier & Cie is a Swiss private bank that was founded in Geneva in 1844 and is active in asset management for private clients. It is a member of the Association of Swiss Private Bankers and one of the last in Switzerland to maintain the status of private banker. You and your four partners are fully liable for your personal property towards the bank. The facility has a banking license in Switzerland, Singapore and the Turks and Caicos Islands , and has offices in the UK , France and Uruguay .

history

The Bordier family came to Geneva in 1554 when Guillaume Bordier, a French Protestant , fled religious persecution in the Orléans region and settled in Switzerland. His descendants first distinguished themselves in the cloth making trade , then in the areas of goldsmithing and jewelry trade as well as in church functions.

The origins of Bank Bordier go back to 1844, when Jacques Reverdin (1812–1895), who was previously employed by Bank Pictet , decided to set up his own bank office in Geneva. In 1871, Ami Bordier (1841–1920), who married the daughter of Jacques Reverdin that same year, joined Reverdin & Cie as a stockbroker . After the death of his father-in-law in 1895, the management of the bank fell back to him and the company, which then had 13 employees, was renamed Bordier & Cie.

Ami Bordier was accompanied by his two sons Pierre and Édouard, who became partners in the bank in 1897 and 1904, respectively. In 1906 the facility moved to 16 rue de Hollande in Geneva, into a building that has been the bank's headquarters ever since. In 1917, Ami Bordier retired , leaving his sons to run the company alone.

Pierre and Édouard's sons joined the company in the 1930s and shaped the entry of the third generation into the family bank. Guillaume and Jacques Bordier, Pierre's sons, became partners in 1936. In 1938 Raymond (Pierre's third son) and Edmond Bordier (Édouard's only son) were added. When Pierre Bordier retired in 1956, the bank already had 32 employees.

In 1966 two members of the fourth generation became partners: Philippe Bordier (eldest son of Jacques) and André Bordier (son of Guillaume). In 1974 the two men found themselves alone at the top of the family bank. They are particularly known for their computerization, which began in 1975 with the introduction of the first IBM system , followed by the introduction of the Olympic software developed by Eri SA in the late 1980s, which enables employees to manage all customer account transactions online.

In 1992, Pierre Poncet became a partner, which was the first time a person outside of the Bordier family had taken on this role. In 1994, Gaétan Bordier joined the company and marked the entry of the fifth generation of the family into the management. Grégoire Bordier, also from the fifth generation, became a partner in 1997 and has held the position of senior partner with unlimited liability since that date. His brother Evrard Bordier also became a fully liable partner in 2011. In 2012, Michel Juvet replaced Pierre Poncet, who became a limited partner, in the same position. Patrice Lagnaux joined Pierre Poncet in 2017 and Alessandro Caldana in 2018. In 2020 Christian Skaanild was made a partner for life.

In 2020, Bank Bordier changed its legal form to a partnership limited by shares and gave up its previous status as a limited partnership mainly for reasons of accounting flexibility. The four main partners of the institution remain liable with their personal assets indefinitely for the obligations entered into by the bank. The institution thus retains the status of a "private banker" and is thus the only institution in western Switzerland that has retained this historical status and one of the last members of the Association of Swiss Private Bankers together with four other banks in German-speaking Switzerland.

activities

Asset management

Bank Bordier's activities have always focused on private banking , which in addition to traditional banking services also includes asset management advice ( finance and real estate), tax advice , legal advice , tailor-made investment advice and inheritance advice .

These services are offered to both Swiss and foreign customers. By mid-2020, Bank Bordier managed 13.3 billion Swiss francs on behalf of its customers.

Asset management

Bank Bordier enables its clients to invest in mutual funds managed by their own teams. Bank Bordier therefore has an asset management department. Banque Bordier's product range includes several SICAV- type funds ( investment funds ) that are invested in European, international or Swiss bonds and stocks.

In 2016, the bank founded a sister company in Switzerland dedicated to non-traditional investments, particularly in the areas of private equity and complex and structured products. Bordier FinLab wants to invest in other funds, by them a start-up capital ( seed money ) offering, particularly in the Fintech sector .

Subsidiaries and partnerships

In 1986 the bank established its first branch: Bordier International Bank & Trust (BiBT), a bank based on the Turks and Caicos Islands. Since 2000 it has been led by Evrard Bordier, who represents the fifth generation of the family.

At the end of the 1990s, Bank Bordier began expanding into other Swiss cities with the opening of its first branch in Zurich in 1997. Two more rural offices were opened in Bern in 1999 and Nyon in 2005 .

In 2001 the bank continued its international expansion by turning to the United Kingdom, where Banque Bordier acquired a 45% stake in Berry Asset Management and became majority shareholder in 2007 with 90% of the capital. The company changed its name to Bordier & Cie (UK) Limited in 2014 and became the London management company of Bank Bordier.

In 2006 the bank set up a management company in Paris and then expanded its presence in France in 2017 with the opening of two regional offices in Rennes and Brest .

In 2007 the bank opened a branch in Montevideo , Uruguay. Bordier & Cie's move to Uruguay in 2018 went hand in hand with the takeover of the Montevideo-based investment advisory firm Helvetia Advisors.

In Asia, the bank opened a branch in Singapore in 2011 and in 2018 entered into a partnership with Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank in Vietnam , which in 2020 will establish a joint venture, MB Private, to offer private banking services to wealthy Vietnamese clients.

Finally, in 2018 Bank Bordier became an official partner of the Expedition Under The Pole , an initiative to promote a better understanding of the underwater world and the problems related to climate change in the oceans .
