Boread painter
The emergency name Boreads painter (formerly Hephaistos painter ; English Boreads painter ) is a Greek vase painter who is considered to be one of the main masters of laconic vase painting and whose works date from 575 to 565 BC. To be dated.
The Boread painter was recognized as early as 1932 during the first thorough processing of laconic ceramics by Arthur Lane , but was still called the Hephaestus painter by him . The name Boread painter goes back to Paola Pelagatti . Brian B. Shefton did not want to recognize any painter personality in the works when the material was reworked in 1956. In his work on laconic vase painting, which is still decisive today, Conrad M. Stibbe compiled the work of the painter, now known as Boread painter, comprehensively in 1972. Along with the Arkesilas painter , the equestrian painter , the hunting painter and the Naukratis painter, he is one of the five main masters of the laconic style. He was probably also the potter of his works. Along with the Naukratis Painter, he is one of the early masters who worked around 575 BC. Began with the production of painted laconic ceramics. His pictures show a very strong Eastern Greek influence. Around 570 BC As the first laconic vase painter, he divided the main picture ( tondo ) of his bowls into a main picture and a smaller segment below the base line of the main picture. This also speaks for a strong influence of East Greek artists who divided their plates in this way according to motifs. This influence goes so far that some researchers believe that the laconic vase painters may have been traveling potters who worked in eastern Greece. The Boread painter also introduced the three-part division of the outside of the bowl, which is typical of Laconia: pomegranates, tongues and rays. He also showed four palmettes with handles . Pomegranates also delimit the interior of his name vase , on which he depicted boreads and harpies . He also shows a picture with Bellerophon , Pegasus and the Chimaira . The vase after which Lane named him depicts Hephaestus ' return to Olympus . The ornaments are typically made with opaque colors. None of the Boreading painter's works, which are exclusively bowls, were discovered in Laconia , so it can be assumed that the production was intended exclusively for export.
