Boris Arapov ( Russian Борис Александрович Арапов ., Scientific transliteration Boris Aleksandrovich Arapov ; born August 30 . Jul / 12. September  1905 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 27. January 1992 ) was a Russian composer .

Life

Arapov grew up in Poltava and received his first music lessons there. Initially he aspired to become a pianist. When he moved back to Petrograd in 1921, he therefore took piano lessons with Maria Yudina . But a hand disease forced him to give up this career aspiration. In 1923 he began to study composition at the Leningrad Conservatory , where he received lessons from Vladimir Shcherbachev . Even before he finished his studies in 1930, he was already working as a teacher. He taught from 1927 to 1932 at the Central Music Technology Center and from 1929/30 at the State Institute for Art History. After completing his studies, Arapov stayed at the Leningrad Conservatory and first became a teacher, then in 1940 a professor. From 1944 to 1948 he had his own composition class, temporarily (1945/46) he was even deputy director. In 1951 he became head of the Faculty of Orchestration, and in 1976 of the Faculty of Composition. Arapov, who taught until the end of his life, had prominent students, for example Sergei Slonimsky . Awards given to him include the title of "People's Artist of the RSFSR" (1976) and the Order of Lenin (1986). The date of death is occasionally given as January 27, 1992.

style

Arapow initially oriented himself to the officially desired compositional style and worked predominantly with nationally influenced style elements. In doing so, he not only limited himself to Russian folklore, but also included music from the Far East in his works. Around 1960, however, Arapov began to deal more freely with tradition. His style became noticeably more rugged, with a greater emphasis on experimentation. Arapov used a more complicated harmony , rhythm and exquisite timbres and largely dispensed with folkloric influences. As subjects, he now more often chose works from world literature. It is not uncommon for a very large, extremely differentiated drum apparatus to be striking . Although his late works have a tonal basis in general, the content of dissonance in these compositions is quite high. In his last works, Arapov added a whole new note to his work by including religious themes. His students valued Arapov for his openness to musical innovations.
