Boris Jakowlewitsch Seldowitsch ( Russian Борис Яковлевич Зельдович , English transcription Boris Y. Zel'dovich; born April 23, 1944 in Moscow ; † December 16, 2018 ) was a Russian physicist who dealt with (nonlinear) optics.

He was the son of the famous Russian physicist Jakow Borissowitsch Seldowitsch and his wife Varwara Pavlovna Konstaninowa.

Seldowitsch studied at the Lomonosov University with the degree in 1966 and continued his studies at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics . In 1969 he received his doctorate. He completed his habilitation in 1981 (Russian doctorate) at the Lebedew Institute . He was a senior scientist there. In 1991 he went to the State University of South Urals , where he founded an optics laboratory. Since 1994 he has been a professor of physics and optics at the University of Central Florida .

Seldowitsch is one of the discoverers of optical phase conjugation (OPC) in an experiment on backward stimulated Brillouin scattering in 1972.

He also predicted the very large optical non-linearity of liquid crystals and proved the prediction experimentally in the 1980s. Further research concerned the nonlinear interaction of light in photoreactive crystals and polar asymmetry of light fields.

He had been a corresponding member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1987 .

In 1983 he received the State Prize of the USSR . In 1997 he received the Max Born Award from the Optical Society of America , of which he was a fellow.
