The Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 67 acres (27.1 hectares ) large protected area in the Boston area Mattapan in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
The now defunct Boston State Hospital psychiatric clinic used to stand on the site . The Massachusetts Audubon Society has converted it into a spacious park and uses it, among other things, to bring Boston residents closer to nature. More than 150 species of birds and more than 40 butterfly species live on the meadows and in the wetlands of the protected area, and over 350 different species of plants thrive there. There are 2 mi (3.2 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors, half of which are barrier-free . There is also a community garden that is managed by 260 families.
