The Bou-Regreg ( Arabic أبو رقراق, DMG Abū Raqrāq ; Central Atlas Tamazight ⴰⵙⵉⴼ ⵏ ⴱⵓⵔⴳⵔⴰⴳ Asif n Buregrag ) is an approximately 240 kilometers long river in Morocco in the Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer region .

geography

The Bou-Regreg has several headwaters, all of which have their source in the mountains of the Middle Atlas in the region west of Khénifra . It flows into the Atlantic Ocean between the cities of Rabat and Salé . Its average flow rate is 23 m³ / s, but this could - before the construction of the reservoir - increase to up to 1500 m³ / s after heavy rainfall.

About 20 kilometers from their mouth, the Bou Regreg and the Oued Grou are dammed in the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah reservoir, inaugurated in 1974, which - with its capacity of 245 million cubic meters - essentially ensures the drinking water supply of the sister cities Rabat and Salé.

history

Antiquity

The estuary of the Oued Bou Regreg has been inhabited since prehistoric times. There are remains of a Punic port in the area of the Chellah of Rabat. The Romans later took over this square and expanded it into a city, the remains of which are still visible today.

Corsair Republic of Bou-Regreg

In 1627 the two cities of Salé and Rabat merged to form the independent republic of Bou-Regreg , which achieved considerable wealth through piracy and slave trade . At that time the old town ( medina ) of Rabat was expanded. Around 1640 the pirate republic became dependent on the Dila brotherhood and after their defeat in 1666 it was conquered by the Alawids (for details see: Pirate republic Bou-Regreg ).
