Bouizakarne ( Arabic بو يزكارن, Zentralatlas-Tamazight z Buyzakarn ) is a city with about 15,000 inhabitants in the province of Guelmim in the region of Guelmim-Oued Noun in southern Morocco .

location

Bouizakarne is located at an altitude of approx. 635  m in the western foothills of the Anti-Atlas , about halfway between Agadir or Tiznit in the north and Tan-Tan or Guelmim in the south on the important main road N1. In addition, the N12 ends or begins here, which leads south of the Anti-Atlas Mountains via the cities of Taghjijt , Akka , Tata to Foum Zguid ; an extension to Zagora is planned. The climate is semi-desert; Rain (approx. 150 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the winter half-year.

In the second half of the 20th century, but especially after the occupation of the Western Sahara areas (November 1975), the small Berber village developed from a place with around 1,500 inhabitants to a small town with around 15,000 inhabitants. Most of the immigrants are Berber families from the more distant mountain regions who flee to the cities from the increasing drought.

economy

For centuries, the basis of life for the population was the oasis economy and the caravan trade with black Africa ; the principle of self-sufficiency dominated, which was gradually abandoned because of the improvement in transport during and after French colonial rule . Located at the intersection of two important roads, transport and trade play important roles in the city's economic life.

History and sights

As in all Berber regions of the Maghreb , no written evidence is known of Bouizakarn's earlier history . The city has no historically or culturally significant sights.
