The Limited Deluxe Box of the album Neues von Gott von Favorite

A box (also deluxe box , fan box or box set ) is an extended release of a sound carrier , which usually contains additional material in addition to the actual work. This includes, for example, posters, t-shirts or autograph cards, but more unusual or album-specific content is also possible. In German-speaking countries, the additional marketing of a box has become established , especially for Deutschrap publications. These are often limited to small numbers.

history

Although fan boxes have already appeared in many genres in the form of compilations or through the addition of additional music material, a box with non-musical content is more of a new trend in the field of German rapeseed. The Düsseldorf label Selfmade Records is considered to be the initiator of this genre when, in addition to the normal version of the album Jung, brutal, good-looking by the rappers Kollegah and Farid Bang, they also launched a box version in 2009 . The metal box marketed as a steel box was limited to 1,500 copies and could only be obtained from the online mail order company Amazon . The box contains the album, a t-shirt, an autograph card signed by Kollegah and Farid Bang, a poster and a bonus track on an additional CD.

Many other labels followed suit when they realized that selling a box can also have marketing advantages. When calculating the German music charts , the total number of records sold does not play a role, but rather the total turnover generated. Since a box can be sold for an amount many times higher than the normal version of an album due to its exclusive status, it is a suitable means of influencing the chart position of an artist.

Content

Frequent box contents are, for example, further CDs with bonus tracks or instrumental versions, DVDs, posters, autograph cards, competitions or T-shirts. In the meantime, other items of clothing such as jackets, sweaters or slippers can be found in the boxes more often. A second copy of the album on another sound carrier such as B. a record or compact cassette there.

In 2016 the rapper Massiv put an ampoule with his own blood in the box for his album Raubtier . The box version of the album Je m'appelle Kriminell des Rappers 18 Karat , released in 2019, even includes a functional mobile phone.
