Sciuro-hypnum glaciale (synonym Brachythecium glaciale Schimp.) Is a deciduous moss species from the Brachytheciaceae family . German names are Gletscher-Schweifchenastmoos or Gletscher-Neuhaarblattmoos .

features

The medium-sized plants form stretched, loose, yellow-green to gray-green lawns. The creeping trunks are irregularly branched, the branches up to 8 millimeters long. Trunks and branches are densely roof-tile-like and have twisting leaves. The stem leaves are up to about 1.5, a maximum of 1.8 millimeters long, oval-triangular, the widest point at 1/7 to 1/5 of the leaf length, thinly pointed, slightly wrinkled, running down short on the stem. The leaf margins are serrated and turned back at the leaf base, the leaf vein ends above the leaf center. The cells of the middle of the leaf are elongated, 30 to 70 micrometers long and 6 to 11 micrometers wide, those of the leaf wing are square to short rectangular, about 10 by 15 micrometers in size. Branch leaves are narrower and their edges more serrate.

The moss is autocratic (antheridia and archegonia on different branches on the same plant). Sporophytes are very rare; the seta is warty and rough, the capsule horizontal and high-backed, the lid conical and briefly pointed.

Location claims and distribution

Sciuro-hypnum glaciale grows in open, cold habitats on places long covered with snow such as on glacier moraines, in snow pits and in similar locations, mainly on silicate substrate. The species is distributed locally in the northern hemisphere. In the Alps it occurs particularly in the central parts, here it is scattered to frequent in alpine to nival altitudes.
