Bradley Lee Daugherty (born October 19, 1965 in Black Mountain , North Carolina ) is a retired American basketball player . Daugherty was the first overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft and played his entire career for the Cleveland Cavaliers .
college
Daugherty played for the successful University of North Carolina under the coaching idol Dean Smith . Among other things, Daugherty was Michael Jordan's teammate between 1982 and 1984 . Daugherty was considered one of the best center players of his time. As a 16-year-old, he played for the Tar Heels college team . In 2002 he was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame .
NBA
In the 1986 NBA draft , the Cleveland Cavaliers took first place. Together with his rookie colleagues Ron Harper and Mark Price , the Cavaliers improved their record. Daugherty was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team . Over the next few years he was a consistent point supplier and rebounder. He was nominated five times for the NBA All-Star Game between 1988 and 1993 . In 1992 he was also called up to the All-NBA Third Team .
At the age of 30, after two years of inactivity, he announced his retirement due to back problems. During his eight-year career, Daugherty scored 19 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. He left the Cavaliers as the most successful points collector and rebounder in team history. His point record was later surpassed by LeBron James , his rebound record by Žydrūnas Ilgauskas . His jersey number 43 was withdrawn by the Cavaliers on March 1, 1997.
End of career
After retiring , Daugherty worked as an analyst for college basketball games and as a commentator on the NASCAR racing series for ESPN . He was also a co-owner of the Camping World Truck Series team Liberty Racing . Today he continues to work as a commentator and analyst for the NASCAR racing series and is also a co-owner of the JTG Daugherty Racing Team .
