The Bradshaw Mountains ( Yavapai : Wi: kañacha , "rough, black chain of rocks") are a mountain range in central Arizona in the United States . They are named after the brothers Isaac and William D. Bradshaw and were previously known in English as the Silver Mountain Range .
history
The first known settlements in the mountains were inhabited by a group from the Hohokam culture , or a group of Yavapai , the Kwevkapaya , who built fortresses and mined copper around AD 1100 to 1600. In the 1860s, about 2,000 Yavapai lived in the mountains. After ten years of conflict between Yavapai and the government, after the surrender of the Indians in 1873, only about 500 indigenous people lived in the mountain range. William Bradshaw was the first to find gold and silver in the mountains with a group of men in 1863 without being noticed by the Indians. A group led by Joseph Reddeford Walker also found gold and within a few years the Bradshaws were filled with settlers looking for gold, silver and copper . At the beginning of the 20th century, most of the cities that arose were little more than ghost towns .
geography
The area is about 8 km south of Prescott , between the Agua Fria River in the east and the Hassayampa River in the west, and is 40 miles long and 25 miles wide.

- Mount Union , named during the Civil War, is the tallest mountain at 2,432 m (7,979 feet).
- Mount Davis - second highest mountain at 2407 m (7897 feet), named after Jefferson Davis .
- Spruce Mountain - 2346 m (7696 feet)
- Mount Tritle - 2,375 m (7793 feet), named for Frederick Augustus Tritle .
- Towers Mountain - 2325 m (7628 feet).
- Maverick Mountain - 2,269 m (7443 feet).
- Mount Wasson - 1429 m (4687 feet).
geology
The Bradshaw Mountains are comprised primarily of ancient granite , gneiss, and mica schist .
ecology
The Bradshaw flora ranges from chaparral and montane coniferous forest to plains and desert grasslands to shrubland in the Sonoran Desert . Many tree species can be found in the mountains, including pinyon pines , alligator junipers , yellow pines , silver spruce , American quivering poplars , Colorado firs, and Douglas firs . There are also many wild animals, such as umbilical pigs , mountain lions , bobcats , black bears , mule deer , porcupines , foxes , skunks , rock gizzards , wild turkeys and many reptile and amphibious bird species.
Various streams have been dammed, creating reservoirs such as Lynx Lake , Goldwater Lake , Lake Marapai , Hassayampa Lake , Horsethief Lake and Cedar Tank .
