Braj Basi Lal

Braj Basi Lal (often BB Lal ; Hindi ब्रज बासी लाल Braj Bāsī Lāl ; born May 2, 1921 in Jhansi ) is an Indian archaeologist .

Life

Lal studied Sanskrit with a first-class degree from the University of Allahabad . After graduation, Lal developed an interest in archeology and in 1943 became an intern under the British archaeologist Mortimer Wheeler , with whom he worked in Taxila , Harappa and Sisupalgarh .

Between 1950 and 1952 he conducted archaeological studies of the Mahabharata sites, including Hastinapura , the capital of the Kurus . He discovered many Painted Gray Ware locations.

He was Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India from 1968 to 1972 , after which he was Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies in Shimla .

1975-1976 Lal worked on the Archeology Project of the Ramayana Sites , during which excavations were carried out at five sites called in the Ramayana - Ayodhya , Bharadwaj Ashram, Nandigram , Chitrakoot and Shringaverapur . The discovery of temple pillars immediately south of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya was also made.

In 2000 Lal was awarded the Padma Bhushan order .
