The Braldu River , also Braldo , is located in Baltistan in Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan .
It flows through the Karakoram and arises from the meltwater of the Baltoro Glacier . Here it is initially called Biaho . The similarly large Biafogletscher penetrates a few kilometers downstream on the orographic right side from the north to the Braldu Valley. The river separates the Baltoro Muztagh , Panmah Muztagh and Spantik-Sosbun Mountains in the north from the Masherbrum Mountains in the south. In the west, the Braldu joins the Basha coming from the northwest to form the Shigar , which flows south in a wide river valley and flows into the Indus at Skardu .
The river carries extreme white water and was first used by Mike Jones with a kayak sail. The river is best known for the fact that Jones, who is considered the pioneer of white water rafting, drowned in 1978 while trying to rescue a friend who had fallen into the river.
