Branko Marinkovic Jovicevic (born August 21, 1967 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra , Bolivia ) is a Bolivian-Croatian politician and entrepreneur .

Life

His parents from the former Yugoslavia - the father was born in Croatia and the mother in Montenegro - immigrated to Bolivia in 1954. He is married to Nicole de Marinkovic , with whom he has three sons. He studied engineering and economics in the USA at the University of Texas . Since 2000 he has been director of the edible oil industries and since 2004 president of the Association of Private Entrepreneurs and vice president of the commercial bank. From 2007 to 2009 he was president of the “Comité pro Santa Cruz”. Until his escape from Bolivia, he was the head of the Santa Cruz Youth Union , a militant, right-wing extremist organization that functions as the quasi-autonomous, paramilitary arm of the “Comité pro Santa Cruz”. He was considered the most influential and dangerous opponent of the government of the then President Evo Morales and, together with the Prefect Rubén Costas, advocated the autonomy of the Santa Cruz Department .

Marinkovic is spokesman for the Freedom and Democracy Foundation ( Fundación Libertad y Democracia (FULIDE)), which belongs to the Liberal Network Latin America ( Red Liberal de América Latina (RELIAL)) founded by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .

His company conglomerate consists of extensive land, cattle breeding and edible oil companies and bank holdings in both Bolivia and Croatia.

Marinkovic states that his father Silvio Marinkovic fought as a partisan in Tito's People 's Liberation Army against the German occupation forces during World War II . After emigrating to Bolivia, his parents built a new life there with diligence and energy. According to the government of Evo Morales, Marinkovic's father had ties to Croatian fascists of the Ustaše movement, who fled to South America with their National Socialist patrons. Government officials accused Branko Marinkovic that his family's fortunes could be formed. a. also on illegal occupation of land that would have been stolen from the Guarayo people , which he denied in a criminal case in court.

In December 2009, the authorities seized a 12,500-acre ranch belonging to the politician on charges that the property had been acquired by fraud.

In June 2010, a Bolivian court issued an arrest warrant for Marinkovic for failing to appear for questioning in connection with an investigation into terrorism. Investigators had accused him of having financed the deployment of foreign mercenaries in Bolivia, in which, according to police reports, detailed plans and organizational charts were found in addition to automatic weapons and grenades , which President Morales, Vice-President Álvaro García Linera , several ministers and Cardinal Julio named as targets for the assassination.

Marinkovic then fled to the USA, where he was granted asylum , and then moved to Brazil, where he lives today.

During the presidential election in Bolivia 2019 , Marinkovic of Brazil supported Morales' overthrow organized by his successor at the head of the "Comité pro Santa Cruz", Camacho . Marinkovic announced that he would return to Bolivia if there was a change of government.
