The brown-winged ant shrike ( Thamnophilus murinus ) belongs to the genus Thamnophilus within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil , Ecuador , French Guiana , Guyana Colombia , Peru , Suriname and Venezuela .

The distribution area includes moist tropical or subtropical forest , especially "white sand forest", well-drained, hilly terra firme in the Amazon basin and adjacent Andean foothills up to 800 m in height.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin mus, muris 'mouse (mouse-colored)' .

features

The bird is 13-14 cm tall and weighs between 17 and 20 g. The male is gray on top, the cap discreetly darker banded, the wings are dark yellowish-brown, the wing-coverts are gray with white tips and small white spots, the tail is brownish-black and gray with white tips. The underside is paler, often whitish in the middle. The iris is gray or often brown to honey-colored. The female has a reddish brown cap, the upper side is olive brown, the wings brown, wing covers and wing tips bordered with whitish. The tail has a warm dark brown color, the outer tail feathers have discreet whitish tips. The underside is pale gray with a yellowish-brown tint on the chest.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • T. m. canipennis Todd , 1927 - Far East Colombia to Guiana, Suriname and Brazil north of the Amazon
  • T. m. cayennensis Todd , 1927 - French Guiana and Northeastern Brazil
  • T. m. murinus P. L. Sclater & Salvin , 1868, nominate form - Eastern Colombia to Suriname, Northern Brazil north of the Amazon

The call is described as similar to that of the slate gray ant shrike ( Thamnophilus schistaceus ), but usually somewhat shorter.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects and arthropods , which are usually not sought in mixed hunting communities in the undergrowth to medium tree height.

Little is known about the breeding season.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
