The slate gray Ameisenwürger ( Thamnophilus schistaceus ) counts within the family of Antbirds (Thamnophilidae) to the genus of Thamnophilus .
The species occurs in Bolivia , Brazil , Ecuador , Colombia and Peru .
The distribution area includes moist tropical or subtropical forest and marshland up to 800 or 1100 m altitude, relatively common in the Terra Firme in the Amazon basin .
The Latin additional species comes from the Latin schistaceus 'slate gray' .
features
The bird is 13-14 cm tall and weighs between 19 and 21 g. The male is gray, slightly darker on top, wings and elytra are brownish with gray edges, the iris is reddish-brown. The female has a red-brown cap, the top is yellowish to olive-brown, the underside lighter. Fledglings are similar to the female, but the underside can be cinnamon, olive yellow, or pale brown with yellowish flanks. There are no spots on the elytra.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- T. s. capitalis P. L. Sclater , 1858 - eastern foothills of the Andes in southeastern Colombia, in eastern Ecuador and northeastern Peru
- T. s. schistaceus D'Orbigny , 1837, nominate form - Eastern Peru, Northern Bolivia and the Amazon basin in Brazil
- T. s. heterogynus ( Hellmayr , 1907) - Eastern Colombia and the Amazon basin in Brazil
voice
The call is described as a slow nasal tone sequence emphasized on the last double note "anh anh anh AH-ANH".
Way of life
The food consists mainly of insects and arthropods , which are sought alone or as a pair, less often in mixed hunting communities, preferably at a height of 5–10 m, preferably in tendrils and lianas near the trunk.
Little is known about the breeding season.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
