description

The broad-leaved whitebeam is a deciduous or deciduous tree . It reaches heights of growth of 10 to 15 meters. The leaves are 7.5 centimeters wide and 8.5 centimeters long, they are heart-shaped at the base, converge to a point at the end and are triangularly lobed. The underside of the leaf is covered with white felt hairs.

The hermaphroditic, radially symmetrical flowers are arranged in white and racemose shapes. The flowering time is in May. In autumn, the slightly spherical, brown-orange, edible fruits ripen, which can be up to 13 millimeters in size. The broad-leaved whitebeam reproduces apomictically , i.e. asexually.

Occurrence and use

The broad-leaved whitebeam was originally found only in the deciduous and mixed forests of Fontainebleau in the Paris Basin . Since 1750 it has also been planted as an ornamental plant in arboretums , cemeteries or gardens in the temperate latitudes . It was initially thought to be a variety of Swedish whitebeam ( Sorbus intermedia ), but today it is believed to be a hybrid of real whitebeam ( Sorbus aria ) and service tree ( Sorbus torminalis ).

The broad-leaved whitebeam grows in oak and beech steppe forests, in dry oak-hornbeam forests, especially together with Quercus petraea or with Sorbus torminalis .
