The broad-leaved snowdrop ( Galanthus platyphyllus ) is a species of the snowdrop ( Galanthus ) genus in the Amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae). The Voronov snowdrop ( Galanthus woronowii ) is usually incorrectly cultivated under this name .

features

The broad-leaved snowdrop is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 20 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as a persistence organ. The bulb is large, measuring 3.5 to 5 × 1.7 to 2.5 (to 3) centimeters, and is similar to the bulbs of daffodils . The light to dark green and usually glossy leaves measure 12.5 to 25 (32) × 1.7 to 3.4 (6) centimeters at flowering time.

The inner bracts are broadly obovate and blunt or have a notch up to 2 millimeters long. They have a u-shaped green spot at the end and a diffuse, light green spot at the bottom. The anthers are dull.

The flowering period in Central Europe extends from March to April, in the natural habitat from May to June, and sometimes until July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The broad-leaved snowdrop occurs in the West and Central Caucasus up to the Cross Pass on damp or wet lawns at altitudes of (1200) 200 to 2700 meters. This plant species can often be found on melting snow.

use

The broad-leaved snowdrop is seldom used (especially in mountainous regions) as an ornamental plant for groups of trees and shrub beds. It has been in culture since 1866 at the latest.
