The broad-fin sharks ( Lamiopsis ) are a genus of Requiem sharks (Carcharhinidae) that contains two species. The broad-fin shark ( Lamiopsis temminckii ) is found in the Indian Ocean mainly in the shallow seas off the coast of India , the Borneo broad-fin shark ( Lamiopsis tephrodes ) occurs on the north and east coast of Kalimantan .

Appearance and characteristics

The broad-fin shark reaches a maximum body length of 1.70 meters while the Borneo broad-fin shark remains significantly smaller at around 1.30 meters. Both have a light gray or light brownish base color and a whitish belly region. In their habitus they resemble the requiem sharks of the genus Carcharhinus and like them they have an anal fin and two dorsal fins , although the second dorsal fin is almost as big as the first. The broad-based pectoral fins give it its name. They are also characterized by an elongated snout, five gill slits without a spray hole and sawn teeth in the upper jaw with wide triangular tips and smooth-edged and narrow teeth in the lower jaw.

Way of life

The broad-fin sharks are shallow water species and feed predatory on various fish on the shore zones. The sharks are viviparous and form a yolk sac placenta ( placental viviparous ).

distribution

Distribution areas of the genus Lamiopsis , Lamiopsis tephrodes can be found near Borneo .

The broad-fin shark can be found in the Indian Ocean mainly in the shallow seas off the coast of India ; it is less common on the coasts of China and Southeast Asia. The Borneo broadfin shark is found in the western Pacific on the north and east coast of Kalimantan.

Systematics

The genus includes the broad-fin shark ( Lamiopsis temminckii ) and the Borneo broad-fin shark ( Lamiopsis tephrodes ) two species. The Borneo broad-fin shark was described by the American zoologist Fowler in 1839, but later synonymous with the Lamiopsis temminckii , also described in 1839 . Recently, however, molecular biological analyzes have shown that there are two Lamiopsis species.
