The broad-fin shark ( Lamiopsis temminckii ) is a type of requiem shark (Carcharhinidae). In the Indian Ocean, it is found mainly in the shallow sea area off the coast of India .
Appearance and characteristics
The broad-fin shark reaches a maximum body length of 1.70 meters with a light gray or light brownish base color and a whitish belly region. Its habitus resembles the blue shark and, like them, has an anal fin and two dorsal fins , although the second dorsal fin is almost as big as the first. The broad-based pectoral fins give it its name. They are also characterized by an elongated snout, five gill slits and serrated teeth in the upper jaw with wide triangular tips and smooth-edged and narrow teeth in the lower jaw. In addition, they do not have a spray hole either .
Way of life
The broad-fin shark is a pronounced shallow water species and probably feeds on various fish from the shore zones. The sharks are viviparous and form a yolk sac placenta ( placental viviparous ). The females have between 4 and 8 young animals in one litter. According to observations, the birth time is before the monsoon season in April and May, a pregnancy of about 8 months is assumed.
distribution
The species is to be found in the Indian Ocean mainly in the shallow seas off the coast of India , it is less common on the coasts of China and Southeast Asia.
