The Breitstielige ash ( Fraxinus platypoda ) is a deciduous tree art from the genus of the ash in the family Oleaceae . Their natural range is in China and Japan.

The broad-stemmed ash is a small, broad-crowned tree that reaches a height of up to 28 meters, in cultivation usually only up to 10 meters. The twigs are gray-yellow, thick and stiff. The strikingly large terminal buds are brown, longer than wide and have only one pair of scales. The leaves are 20 to 30 centimeters long, composed and consist of five to nine sitting leaflets . The leaflets are 6 to 14 centimeters long and 2 to 3.5 centimeters wide, narrowly obovate to lanceolate, briefly pointed with a broadly wedge-shaped or rounded base. The leaf margin is notched flat. The upper side of the leaf is deep green and bare, the underside is more or less hairy. 10 to 15 pairs of nerves are formed. The petiole is 5 to 6 inches long. The flowers are polygamous and stand in 12 to 15 centimeters long, lateral panicles . Petals are missing. The flowers appear with the leaves in May. The fruits are 3.5 to 5 centimeters long, strikingly wide, flat winged nut fruits , the wing edge of which runs down more or less to the middle.

Distribution and ecology

The distribution area of ​​the broad-stemmed ash are the Chinese provinces of Hubei , Gansu , Sichuan , Yunnan and the area from central Honshū southward in Japan. There it thrives in floodplain and bank trees on moderately dry, fresh to moist, slightly acidic to neutral, sandy soils in sunny locations. It loves warmth and is usually frost hardy . They can be found at altitudes of 1200 to 2800 meters.
